Suicide Awareness and Prevention
On May 13, 2016 Governor Sam Brownback signed The Jason Flatt Act into law. The Jason Flatt Act requires each school district to provide suicide awareness and prevention programming to all school staff each year. “Suicide prevention education enables school professionals to identify warning signs, recognize elevated risk factors, learn basic do’s and don’ts in helping someone who may be struggling with thoughts of suicide” (Kansas Mental Health Coalition 2016).
Our staff has received suicide prevention and awareness training. This year’s training incorporated some material from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. In this power point from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, you will find some of the information that was presented during the staff suicide prevention and awareness training. Additional information specific to parents and caregivers is also attached.
